{"id":1549,"date":"2013-04-19T12:54:22","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T11:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myworldofit.net\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2013-04-27T17:26:19","modified_gmt":"2013-04-27T16:26:19","slug":"update-dell-bios-using-sccm-2012-task-sequence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myworldofit.net\/?p=1549","title":{"rendered":"Update Dell BIOS using SCCM 2012 Task Sequence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I came across a need to update the BIOS of a number of Dell\u00a0PCs, given that the PCs were due to be re-imaged it made sense to perform the update as part of the System Centre Configuration Manager 2012 task sequence process.<\/p>\n<p>To kick this process off you will need<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A need to update the BIOS<\/strong> &#8211; you should only update the BIOS on a PC if a later revision fixes a particular issue you are having (in my case it was\u00a0a wake on LAN issue)<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>BIOS update files<\/strong> from the Dell Support site &#8211; on occasion you <strong>may need to perform a staged update process<\/strong>, for example on the Dell Optiplex 390 to go from Revision A01 to A10 you must first update to A02.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first step of this process requires that you put the BIOS update in as a <strong>Package<\/strong>, follow the guide below to see how this is done.<\/p>\n<p>Please note &#8211; this guide only applies to the &#8216;newer&#8217; packaged style of Dell BIOS updates, the steps to identify if you have one of the newer style packages can be seen in the first three screen shots.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n<p>Next you need to include the package in the <strong>SCCM task sequence<\/strong>, during the process you will need this WMI query (contained within the download to make copy\/paste easy)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/myworldofit.net\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-downloadmanager\/images\/ext\/txt.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/myworldofit.net\/?dl_id=10\">BIOS WMI query<\/a><\/strong> (83 bytes, 4,453 hits)<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\n<p>A few points to note<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You do not want the BIOS update to trigger the restart &#8211; (I have never been able to get this to work without\u00a0causing a error and\u00a0stopping the task sequence)<\/li>\n<li>If you have one of the older BIOS versions you may find <a href=\"http:\/\/en.community.dell.com\/techcenter\/enterprise-client\/w\/wiki\/3461.legacy-bios-updates.aspx\">this list of legacy command line switches<\/a> useful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I came across a need to update the BIOS of a number of Dell\u00a0PCs, given that the PCs were due to be re-imaged it made sense to perform the update as part of the System Centre Configuration Manager 2012 task sequence process.
